Not alone, unless you want to be.
Cruising solo is unique because it offers total control over your schedule. You can spend the entire day reading in a quiet alcove, or fill your schedule with social events. Here is how the major cruise lines set up interactions for solo travelers.
How the major lines organize solo socializing
Norwegian Cruise Line: Private Lounge & Keycard Access
NCL is famous for the Studio Lounge, a private social space with complimentary espresso, drinks, and snacks.
- Access Rule: Keycard entry is restricted exclusively to guests booked in dedicated Solo Studio cabins. Solo guests in standard Inside, Oceanview, or Balcony cabins do not have access.
- Lounge Ships: Available on 9 ships: Aqua, Bliss, Breakaway, Encore, Epic, Escape, Getaway, Prima, and Viva. (PoA has solo cabins but no lounge).
- Hosted Events: NCL hosts daily evening meetups with a crew coordinator who organizes group dinners and show reservations.
Virgin Voyages: App-Driven Socializing & Commuting
As an adults-only line, Virgin Voyages naturally lends itself to solo travelers looking to connect. Rather than dedicated lounges, socializing is woven into the ship’s design:
- App-Listed Meetups: Daily solo traveler gatherings are scheduled directly in the mobile app, alongside fitness classes and workshops.
- The Grog Walk: A popular, fee-based hosted pub crawl on day one that functions as an icebreaker for solo guests.
- Communal Dining: Virgin features communal dining tables, most notably at Gunbae (a Korean BBQ restaurant where tables play drinking games together).
Cunard: Structured Coffee Mornings & Shared Tables
Cunard offers a more traditional and highly structured social experience for solo travelers:
- Daily Meetups: Dedicated daily coffee mornings and evening drinks receptions specifically hosted for solo travelers.
- Assigned Dining: Solo travelers can request to be assigned to a large, shared table in the main dining room, ensuring familiar faces at every dinner.
- Gentlemen Hosts: On select cruises, Cunard provides dance hosts to ensure solo travelers have partners for ballroom dancing.
Celebrity Cruises: Hosted Dinner Tables
Celebrity caters to premium travelers with structured dining options:
- Daily Gatherings: Daily Solo Travelers’ Gatherings hosted by the ship’s activity team in venues like the Sky Lounge or Eden.
- Hosted Dinner Tables: An unhosted, reserved "Solo Traveler Table" is set up in the Main Dining Room nightly so solos can walk in and sit together.
The Dining Room Protocol
In the Main Dining Room on any ship, you have options. When check-in staff ask for your room details, you can request to be seated at a shared table. The maître d’ will seat you with other solo travelers or couples who also requested shared dining.
If you prefer privacy, simply request a table for one. On modern ships, small two-seat tables are common, allowing you to dine quietly with a book without drawing attention.
Hosted vs. Unhosted Meetups
When scanning the ship’s daily newsletter, look for the word Hosted. An unhosted meetup is simply a reserved room where guests must introduce themselves. A hosted meetup includes a member of the entertainment team who facilitates introductions, which significantly lowers the barrier to meeting other passengers.
