Do childhood cruise points expire?
On most major lines, the answer is a resounding no. The points you accumulated sleeping in the pull-down bunk in your parents’ cabin remain attached to your name and date of birth forever. However, the exact rules for reclaiming these points vary by cruise line:
| Cruise Line | Childhood Policy | Reclaim Action Required |
|---|---|---|
| Royal Caribbean | Earned 1 Cruise Point/night. Automatic transfer to adult account at age 18. | Locate original profile by name and birthdate; link to current account. |
| Norwegian (NCL) | Points accrue but lock. Unlocked on your first sailing after turning 18. | Sail once as an adult; Latitudes points will automatically populate retroactively. |
| Carnival | Earned 1 pt/day under VIFP. Profile links automatically at 18. | Link profile via guest portal; Enrollment rules change Sept 2026. |
| Princess | Automatic membership. Credits persist. Double credits for solo occupancy. | Call member services if your childhood Captain’s Circle number is missing. |
| Disney | Automatic Castaway Club membership. Full tier status retained as an adult. | Retrieve your member ID using the Disney Guest Profile portal. |
| Holland America | 3rd/4th guests (minors) accrue full Cruise Day credits. Permanent history. | Verify historic Mariner Society days are consolidated under your adult profile. |
| Celebrity | Enrollment is 18+ only. Minor sailings do not directly accrue points. | Request sister-brand reciprocity if you hold Royal Caribbean status. |
The Royal Caribbean 340+ Point Solo Advantage
If your childhood family vacations were long voyages or in suites, your point balance might be higher than you think. Solo suite sailors accrue 3 points per night (double points for solo occupancy + suite bonus).
Under Crown & Anchor rules, members with 340+ Cruise Points receive a permanent reduction on single supplements. Instead of the standard 200% single occupancy rate, their supplement is reduced to 150% on standard itineraries, and down to 125% on Transatlantic, Transpacific, and Panama Canal sailings.
Claim childhood VIFP points before the program closes
Carnival is transitioning from VIFP to the new Carnival Rewards program in September 2026. Under the new program rules, guests under the age of 18 can no longer enroll in their own right due to updated privacy compliance; instead, minors’ onboard spending will credit the primary adult account.
If you cruised as a child on Carnival, you must claim and link your childhood VIFP profile before this transition occurs in September 2026 to ensure your historic balances convert correctly.
The MSC Status Match Lattice: Instant Upgrade
If your childhood status is with a cruise line that doesn’t offer solo-friendly benefits, or if your points have lapsed, there is an elite shortcut.
MSC Cruises offers an active Status Match Program. They will match your elite loyalty status from 55 different travel programs—including competitor cruise lines and major hotel chains like Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, and World of Hyatt.
For example, if you hold Marriott Gold status through a credit card or historic travel, MSC will match you directly to MSC Voyagers Club Gold. This unlocks a 5% discount on all bookings, priority boarding, and complimentary access to the thermal area on Board.
Note: MSC Voyagers Club points expire after 3 years of no sailing. However, if your status has lapsed, MSC offers a flat 500-point reinstatement for any past passenger who has sailed with them since 2006.
